Checking of CVs and Covering Letters: In recent years I have read through hundreds of CVs and covering letters from people applying for jobs. There have been times when I have been amazed that a person wanted the post, or may even have thought that they had any chance at all of obtaining it, so poorly presented was the application.

Your job application has to rise above the average for an employer even to begin to consider it. There may be over a hundred applications for one post, and the employer may be looking to interview five to ten people before choosing the successful candidate. You need to impress with your electronic or paper application before you are going to have any chance of presenting yourself for interview.
